No Man's Sky Retro:About

Background

No Man's Sky Retro is a community and wiki centred around retro or legacy versions of No Man's Sky, which are generally regarded as the first release and subsequent 3 major updates to the game prior to the release of No Man's Sky NEXT.

The community began in 2021 as the discord server created by Qjimbo in response to the No Man's Sky discord server removing their #nms-legacy channel. Our discord server was initially intended to replace that lost channel and be a place to discuss old versions of the game. Later, Qjimbo went on to create the companion website nomansskyretro.com as a reference to help give people information about how to install old versions of the game.

Today and Future

Today No Man's Sky Retro has grown to become a thriving modding community, with Guides, Technical Documents and continuing analysis of the game. The website and community is also an homage to one of Qjimbo's favourite websites, Sonic Retro, a wiki and community based around the original Sonic the Hedgehog games. Much like that community which encourages and celebrates game modification, at No Man's Sky Retro we are also aiming to do the same.

We have also had significant contributions from other members of the community such as EthanRDoesMC, who was responsible for fixing the shaders to work on newer graphics cards as detailed on Compatibility Fixes.

As the original versions of No Man's Sky continue to get older and more understood, they could serve as a similar platform for people to come up with their own ideas, we can open up the entire game engine to endless potential. Even the original version the engine is a solid starting point for creative ideas and unlike any other games.
