Summary

The initial release of No Man's Sky was version 1.00, which was exclusively available on the Playstation 4 console. Sony requires developers to submit a Golden Master version for certification before the game's release. The certified version, which is the same as the one on the disc, is version 1.00.

On July 10, 2016, the game's creator, Sean Murray, tweeted that the RC1 version of No Man's Sky had passed certification, indicating that the build date for version 1.00 was shortly before then. However, the actual date depends on how long it took Sony to verify the game. While version 1.00 can be played from the Playstation 4 disc without an internet update, most updated their game to version 1.03, which was released on launch day, before playing.

PC users were never able to access version 1.00. The first version available on Steam and GOG.COM was Update 1.03.

Playing

Playing the original version of No Man's Sky is fairly trivial if you have the original release PS4 disc. Simply delete your installed copy and any save games and install with the internet disconnected.

Analysis

A copy of the EU version of RC1 v1.00 was shared on the internet archive to download in Playstation 4's PKG format. Helpfully the package on there has also been decrypted, allowing us to view and extract the contents of the PKG with maxton's PkgEditor. A jailbroken PS4 is no longer required to dump the contents of the PKG file.

Extracting the Files

1. Go to https://github.com/maxton/LibOrbisPkg/releases and download PkgEditor-0.2.231.zip.

2. Extract the zip file and run PkgEditor.exe

3. Go to File -> Open and open the PKG File

4. On the Files tab, navigate to Inner PFS Image -> uroot -> data -> nms-arc

5. Drag and select all the .psarc files, right click and click Extract.

6. Download PSArcTool, extract the Zip and Drag the .psarc files onto it to extract them.

MBIN Files

Much like with the later releases, MBIN files can be extracted with MBINCompiler. monkeyman192 has released a special version of MBINCompiler to handle MBINs from the RC1 build.

Using this tool, MBIN files from this build can be decompiled into EXML files to view how the game is configured.
